05:04 pm - Dear Spammers Thanks a fucking lot.
If I EVER find out which one of you lot of scum sucking, rock hiding, pre-evolutionary, single celled, barely sentient organisms is spoofing my domain and my email, I am suing you back to the primordial ooze from whence you crawled.
So screw you and the amoeba which you rode in on. Current Mood: infuriated

03:07 am - 7 years! The 7th Annual
PLAY HOOKY DAY!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time again! Time for fun in the sun (we hope), playing on rides both wet and dry. I can’t believe it’s been seven years.
When: Wednesday, July 30th
Where: Wild Waves (Federal Way, WA)
Time: Meet up just before the 10:00 am opening time at the main entrance
Who: Sponsored by Melissa's family, but everyone's welcome.
How: RSVP below! Or in email to tabbifli AT livejournal DOT com
We'd like to get the group rate. For that rate, we need 12 (twelve) entry-fee paying people, minimum. The group rate is $19.99 - that includes the entry and all the rides. This is $9 less than the online price, and $15 less than the normal entry fee ($10 less for kids), so it's a really good price.
Children under the age of 2 do not need to pay to get in. :)
Once we have 12 or more people paying to get in, those with season passes or free entry tickets can join in the fun as well, but until then, I’d prefer those folks to hold off on telling me they’re coming.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Due to requirements BY THE PARK, I have to get the tickets 2 weeks in advance (probably because their shopping cart sucks rocks. Honestly). See the dates below - those are FIRM DATES. If you can't tell me by those dates, you pay higher rates.
Credit cards and cash may be used within the park for food, lockers and raft / tube rentals. There is also an ATM on site. More information on the rides and park amenities is available at
The Wild Waves Website
Come play with us!
Important Notes:
I will need to know who is planning on going by July 14th so I can place the ticket order on July 16th. Generally, I collect money when I distribute the tickets at the park. I take cash, checks and money orders.
They finally note the parking fee on the website - $10 per car.
If people would like to carpool, I encourage them to do so. However, due to difficulties in previous years, I no longer make those arrangements. :) Feel free to use comments to start the discussion. I strongly suggest that carpoolers expect to chip in for the parking fee.
Please feel free to invite your friends - it's open to anyone who'd like to come. Be aware that there WILL be kids in the group. Let me know if you’d like the text-only version of the invitation.
Already counted (11) (Please let me know about changes ASAP!)

09:37 pm - Christmas Tea! Tea hasn't been happening on my end, because either I'm working, or it's the same weekend as Norwescon meetings. Plus, Free Time is somewhat of a myth for me.
However! Sunday, December 9th is Christmas Tea.
Where: My house, in Lynnwood. Directions upon request (and everyone will be requesting, I'm not on ANY maps or GPS).
When: Sunday, December 9th at 1:30pm
Why: Because it's Christmas Tea, and it's tradition! (sort of)
What: You bring teas you want to share. There will be teapots and teas here, along with snacks (menu TBA).
How Many: I can actually seat up to about 24, if I borrow a few chairs. Cups and plates might get interesting, so if we get up to that many, please offer to bring your favorite mug. Or your second-favorite, in case of breakage. :)
THE CATCH: I NEED RSVP by FRIDAY at 4:00 PM!!! Unfortunately, I have to work on Saturday (again!) so I'm going to have to order food to be brought in, and I'll need adequate time to make sure everyone is properly counted.
IF anyone wants to bake goodies, please indicate that in the note.
I apologize for the very late notice. See above note about time being a mythological beast. If someone else would like to take over tea organizing, I'm happy to give you my notes. Please let me know. Current Mood: Tea!

07:40 am - Seattle PSA: Perm. Jobs available Feel free to point anyone here. I'll answer general questions openly; questions about "how do I contact someone about this" I'll answer in screened comments so that the email address or phone number I give doesn't get picked up by a bot.
Job #2 is where I am currently. I'm not leaving the position, precisely - I'm just not full time, and it really needs a full time person. I'm moving on to be a "floater" for the company, with the same title, just located out of Lynnwood / Alderwood. I like the job, I'm just too ill to handle a full time position.
In addition to contacting the head folks, anyone who wants to apply for the positions will need to fill out an application. This can be done in the stores, but if you come to the B'vue Square Penney's, I can specifically help you.
-----
Position 1: Installer for Custom Decorating Location: Starts out of Tukwila, but installs are from Marysville down to Tacoma, from West Seattle to the Cascades - possibly to include the peninsula, and may go up to Bellingham and down to Olympia or Vacouver, WA. I'm not install, so I'm not sure. Duties: Install drapes, shades, blinds, shutters, etc. at the customer's house as indicated by the orders filled out by the decorator. Minimum requirements: Ability to use a drill. Useful skills: Ability to be friendly while keeping one's mouth shut (*) Dress code: Closed, non-skid shoes, work pants, collared shirts (such as polo). Pay: Minimum $13.50 / hr + benefits after training Benefits: Health, dental, vision, 401(k), paid holiday, earned paid time off, 20% Penney's discount Training provided Company van provided after training complete Schedule: Full time. Sundays off; Tues - Friday on, Rotating Mondays and Saturdays. Apply: Call Dave (head installer), number available in screened comments. (*) If you have to make a comment about an install, don't make it to the customer! Go out to the van and call the darn decorator!
-----
Position 2: Custom Decorating Studio Coordinator. Location: Bellevue Square, Bellevue Duties: Answering phone; making appointments; greeting customers; answering questions; maintaining studio appearance; providing backup customer service; maintaining timesheets and schedule; entering data on customers, orders, specification sheets & appointments; reviewing & resolving order issues. Minimum requirements: Professional telephone and communication skills; basic data entry skills; basic arithmetic (money and percentages); basic typing skills; prefer 2 - 6 months in a similar field (data entry is a similar field); basic understanding of color coordination and/or decorating techniques is useful. Useful skills: Ability to sound and look cheerful no matter what. This is not the place for a misanthrope - you have to really like people. Ability to nicely and politely stand up to strong personalities is an absolute must. Dress code: General business (slacks or skirts and blouses for women, slacks and button down shirt for men) Pay: Minimum wage or higher / hr + benefits depending on experience (Note: It's unlikely to start at more than $9.00 an hour) Benefits: Health, dental, vision, 401(k), paid holiday, earned paid time off, 20% Penney's discount Training provided Schedule: Full time, 9:30 - 5:30 OR 10:00 - 6:00 (you will have to come in on the early schedule one day a week to make a store meeting). Sundays off. Two Saturdays / month required. Schedule dependent on studio & decorators. Apply: Email cover letter and resume to Beth. Email address provided in screened comments. Current Mood: Late for work

06:14 pm - 3 General Announcements 1. I apparently missed several notifications of replies prior to about mid-May.
2. Notifications of MY replies apparently did not get sent out in early June.
If you were expecting information, responses, or other comments from me and did not get them, please notify me below. In the case of #1, it's pretty good odds that I didn't see what I was supposed to reply to due to the up-and-down nature of the network (notwork!) prior to mid-May, before our ISP finally helped Verizon get ... nevermind. In the case of #2.. you might have missed it, and I can re-reply.
3. Seattle Area Boxes are still available!!!! (I can toss in a few more exclaimation points if need be). A couple of flat wardrobe, MANY medium, MANY MORE smalls, and ... well, let's just not try counting the banker's boxes. Some of the medium have never been used, most of the rest have been used once. They are all nicely transportable. They are taking up space in my garage, and I want them gone. Soon. If you want them, say so and let's start figuring out how to get you and them together (feel free to point other local people this way!). I can help get them to you, if need be.
If nobody speaks up by sometime on Monday, I will take them to the recycle bin.
Next weekend, we're going to start pegboarding the garage so we can find the tools. Current Mood: determined

Time: Meet up just before the 10:00 am opening time at the main entrance

11:45 am - PSA for Seattle area residents I have quite a few used once and still in good condition banker's boxes (great for moving books and videos), some (again, previously used) U-Haul "small" boxes, and half a dozen or so U-Haul medium boxes that haven't been used. These are available to anyone who wants them.
This is a limited time offer, because I'm going to get very tired of looking at them relatively quickly and take them to be recycled.
Arrangements can be made for getting the boxes where they need to go. Leave message below.
kendaer also has some, maybe.

03:30 pm - So.. explain why "thingy" isn't a technical term in YOUR field.. See, the chimney's cursed. I can't (couldn't) get a masonry contractor to get out here to take a look at it to get it repaired. Most of them wouldn't even bother returning my calls; the ones who did would blow off the appointments with me (if they made them in the first place). Frequently, the conversations on the phone would go like this (note that the contractor was inevitably a him):
-----------
Me: There's no damper or flue, but there used to be something in there, and all the hot air is going out the chimney and it needs to be fixed
Him: What do you mean, no damper or flue? All fireplaces have dampers or flues. (pause) Do you have a husband I can talk to?
Me: No. I have a husband - have two of them, actually - but you can't talk to either one of them. They're at work. I'm at home. I'm the one who handles the house business and repairs are house business. Now, can you come take a look at this and see if you can fix it or not?
-----------
Because, you know, a husband would make more sense and make the flue magically appear in our chimney. Idiots.
Compare and contrast that to the conversation I had today with the office manager of a restoration and repair specialty company:
-----------
Me: There's no damper or flue, but there used to be something in there, and all the hot air is going out the chimney and it needs to be fixed
Her: OKay, I can see where that'd be a problem. I can have Marty out there to take a look and sketch out the problems tomorrow at 2. Will that work for you? You'd have the estimate in the mail on Friday morning, or, sure, we can fax it to you.
-----------
If Marty shows up as expected, guess who's getting the job? It's such a relief dealing with professionals. Current Location: home - which doesn't make me an idiot. Current Mood: cranky

04:24 am - It goes so *slowly*.. We're going through our books, sorting them, putting them in a database and packing them up (various and sundry reasons here). There are a not insubstantial number of books going to the library as a result of this sorting and weeding - books that none of us feel a particular attachment to or need to re-read. A few books that none of us remember ever reading, or purchasing for that matter, in the first place. One or two which we have to wonder why is in existence at all.
The books that are going to the library will be making a stop at tea this weekend with me, so that they may get pawed over, and perhaps claimed, by those who are going to tea and may have an interest in them. The advantage over giving them to the library, however, is that we get charity tax credit for the library. :) Friends give no such credit, and used bookstores aren't places we frequent often enough to bother turning them in there. I do, on the other hand, frequent the library when I want something I had previously owned and had forgotten the contents of.
It's somewhat suprising to me that, although I am the fastest and perhaps most voracious of the readers in the house, I have the least number of books I am claiming as my own. Perhaps this is because I am the one most likely to hit up the library for books; alternately it is because I am also as likely to hit Harlequin as Science Fiction Book Club for my reading material (and ALL of my Harlequins go to the library!), usually with far more coming from Harlequin and their associated presses than anywhere else these days (fast reads that don't require a lot of committement from me. This is a good thing). However, those books which I am claiming, I really do very much want. Some of them I've had since I was a teenager; others I've read and re-read.
The books going to the library are by no means all completely crappy books, either. Alan Dean Foster, Robert Forward and Robert Heinlein all have books being sent over. David Eddings has a nice, if tame, fantasy series. The latter Xanth novels ... well, okay, those were crap, nevermind. Quite a few miscellaneous mysteries (thanks to an associated press) and several one-shot fantasy authors who would have done a lot better if they hadn't been competing against the Lackey & Kurtz Of The Month clubs. We haven't gone through them yet, but it won't suprise me if most of the tie-in novels (Star Wars, Stargate, Star Trek, Buffy, Angel, etc) novels wind up in bags, too.
Why I'm saying it's going slow, though, is because we'll only manage to go through the K's and the mixed-media & various author by tomorrow night. We've been doing this for a week. Now, granted, we're all busy and this has been an unusually busy week - but it doesn't seem like it should be THAT hard. I just wish it'd go a little faster. I want my table back, I can't fold laundry right now (whine, whine whine)! It'll probably be done by the end of next week. Current Mood: lethargic

October 1st, 2006
12:32 am It's almost 12:30 am, and there's an inconsiderate idiot (is that redundant?) with a stereo on in a house in the street behind mine (which is around a half- to full acre away). I know this because it's loud enough that I can hear the country-western music it's playing quite clearly (I don't give a damn if that's 'what [you] do', shut the hell up!) with the window open.
Since it's not someone I know, I can't just walk over and point out that it's after midnight, could they please turn down the radio now? There's some rental properties in the area, and they've rented to Buff Young Men, who aren't necessarily going to listen (or be polite to) a middle-ageish bat like myself. Especially not after as much alcohol as is required to sing that badly and loudly to John "Cougar" Mellancamp's 'Jack & Diane'.
I called the police non-emergency line about 20 minutes ago, asking them to please go register a disturbing-the-peace call. They said "as soon as we can send someone out there". Meanwhile, Alex is being kept awake and Ava is staring daggers out the window. I don't think she likes this stuff. I can't blame her, neither do I. I don't mind 'Jack & Diane', but they turned that off and back on to something country with bad guitar and nasty lyrics. Whoops. They don't seem to be capable of listening to a whole song through, they just turned it to something else.
I'm really hoping the nice PEACE OFFICER shows up soon and discovers a bunch of underage drunks or something that will shut the party down and keep it turned off. :P The young family in the house directly behind me has got to be hoping that the baby and toddler stay asleep right now.
Minor, petty annoyances in a minor, petty day.
Edit: About 12:35, the music abrubtly shuts off entirely (from my perspective). I guess the nice peace officer showed up. Current Mood: aggravated Current Music: Oh, HELP!

03:37 pm - The Joy of Ava At the end of July / beginning of August, my darling Belle died. She was perhaps one of the most loving cats I'd ever had the privilege to live with, and her passing was - and is - hard to take. She had micro-metastasized intestinal cancer; something we couldn't have spotted, and couldn't have treated if we had spotted it. It took an autopsy to find out why she died, and a cause of death to relieve me of the guilt that had been eating me (for not saving her).
We let her go on a Monday. The Saturday before she had started refusing medication; that weekend was particularly hot and there were a great many asthma and other health warnings in the area. The heat got up to nearly 100 degrees F, which is highly unusual for the Seattle region. Neither Belle nor I do well in heat - the only one of us who was happy, in fact, was Jasmine, our Siamese, who thought it had FINALLY gotten warm enough. Because of the poor air quality, and my own neglect of myself while caring for Belle, I developed a cough around my asthma. On Monday, Belle refused food and barely drank her milk and we knew it was time to say goodbye; on Tuesday or Wednesday I was diagnosed with bronchitis.
Two weeks later, just before Play Hooky Day, we adopted a new cat, Ava. Ava's a sub-compact model - only 7 pounds, full grown. We thought at first that she was still young, but it turns out that she's a little over 2 years. She has many of the characteristics of a Korat, including the Ears of Doom (her ears are HUGE), she's curious, and active. She's curious even when she's scared, which we thought was a good sign when we got her. We found out during her adoption that she had been born in the shelter we got her from, and that she'd never been adopted before. She'd been kept back after birth to stay with her brother, who'd been born with an immunio-deficiency virus. They thought that by keeping the sibs together, the brother had a better chance at survival. He died, regardless, and she was fostered out to a couple of different homes, the last of which had just given her back 2 months previous after a flea outbreak.
( All About Ava (long!) )
Oh, yeah. Somewhere in there, my bronchitis? Turned into walking pneumonia. All I've wanted to do for the last six weeks is sleep. Current Mood: tired

08:46 pm - Birthday gathering for JT JT ( kendaer) has a birthday on June 30. On July 2nd, after the movie (Superman Returns, details will be posted on seattlecats as usual) we're having a get together at our place. There will be food (grilled meat, fruit, some miscellaneous veggies) and non-alcoholic beverages provided.
If I can find a way to heat the pool, that'll get set up, too. I'm not holding my breath, though - a web search didn't turn up anything helpful, and the solar cover is really not sufficient.
The movie will be up in Lynnwood, about 11:30. The get-together will be back at our place in Kirkland afterward, so probably around 2 (depending on how long the movie runs and the time of the actual start). There's street parking available. For directions to our house, please email tabbifli AT livejournal DOT com.
If you think you'll make it, please let us know (post, IM, email, call, say in person - whatever!). We'd rather not run out of food :) (Those of you who know me know that's really not a joke).
Oh, yeah. He'll be 38.

04:50 pm - Hello, my memory is missing.. If I have said in the last month or so that I'd do something for you (since about late-March, actually) and I haven't, could you please remind me what that thing was?
Email (tabbifli @ LJ will work) or post. This is an unlocked post, however.
No, my mind is not THAT gone, so trying to "pull one over on" me isn't going to work. :)
Let me know if I'm beind in my correspondance with you, if you like. That won't necessarily speed me up, but it will will remind me to go find the last email I needed to reply to and print it out so that I can start making notes.
And yes, I KNOW I'm way behind on the seattlecats calendar. I'm working on it. It got bigger. Current Mood: forgetful

11:26 am - Meme This sort of meme I do rarely, but this one doesn't require comments or ask for compliments, and the words are pre-chosen, so I'm good with it. :)
The idea is that you go to the page and pick 6 words that you think describes me, as you know me. I've already picked the ones that I think work for myself. Eventually, there develops a general idea of what people see, vs. what I project, and what I think I am but not showing.
There were a few folks who did this, and it was interesting.

11:53 pm - Christmas Eve Mass Info For those of you who were planning on going to carols and/or mass with us, here's the info.
We're going to the 7:00 pm Carols and 7:30 pm Mass at St. Mark's Episcopalian Cathedral (the link is to the Christmas Eve schedule, you can get directions off the associated pages). We will be leaving the eastside between 5:30 and 6 to get to the church between 6 and 6:30. Aside from Jen and Glenn, I don't know if anyone else plans to be there, so if you are expecting to sit with us, you might want to drop a note here before about 3:30 in the afternoon and let me know, so I can make sure there are enough seats together.
Alternately, give one of the three of us (JT, Alex or I) during the transportation time (5:30 to 6:30) and I'll do what I can then. Between 4 and 5:30, then again after 6:30, our phones will be on SILENT, and we will NOT hear them! We probably won't feel them vibrate, either.
I will not hold seats past about 6:45. There's likely to be more than enough people there that I'd just plain feel guilty.
Anyone coming back to the eastside afterwards may stop in for a short while at our place for a sandwich & tea. Current Mood: tired

09:49 pm - Coffee Redux You ever have one of those moments?
My mom just sent me email. The last paragraph: I talked to Tom [Ed: my brother] and he said you were buying a coffee pot and coffee. If you haven't gotten it yet, don't worry about it. Dad has been drinking tea lately and he will be just as happy with that.
I have the coffee. The pot will follow tomorrow.
